Our Summer in a Nutshell

I asked the boys today if they were having a good summer vacation so far. Both Hunter and Noah enthusiastically exclaimed, "Yeah!" Wow, I thought, I'm doing good. Then I asked them what was so great about their summer vacation and Hunter said, "When Megan comes over three days a week and plays Starcraft with me, and I get to play Starcraft for two days straight, and when Daddy plays Starcraft with me, and when I get to play Starcraft on Sunday sometimes." That's it, I thought. What about the trips to the Lake, the swimming pool parties and slip-n-slide parties, and the crafts and the popsicles and the trips to the Library and listening to Harry Potter and watching movies together and all that stuff? What about me? What about all my efforts?

So today we went to a nearby park where there's a nice little river and I let the kids wade in and go swimming. There was a boy and girl there swimming also and they managed to catch a baby turtle and a crayfish, which the boys thought was "so cool!" They played together in the water with their new friends for almost two hours. Even Caleb went swimming in the water and was thrilled, despite the fact that his diaper absorbed half of the river. But at the end of the day, I guarantee you, it wasn't half as fun or as cool as sitting at home playing computer games with their cousin Megan. But you know I'll keep trying because dang it, I'm more fun than any party Mario might throw.

They are not going to remember the summer that they played computer games. They will remember the summer they went to the lake, and the river, and the park and the library, and the crafts and all the things you made an effort to do. That is what they will remember. Don't sweat it, honey! You're doin a great job!!

JL's right, and you know it, of course. Wish I could play at the lake and the river and the park and the library with y'all. Hope you're managing to enjoy a bit of it yourself, too.
