Vain

For as long as I can remember, I've had this nasty mole/skin tag under my right eye.

I've always hated it and have always been very self-concious about it. Most of you probably have gotten used to it over the years and hardly notice it at all. But not me. I see it all the time and have wished time and time again that it would go away. But it has refused. I've asked all sorts of doctors to remove it for me. They all have said "no, it's too risky." I finally had one doctor tell me I would have to have "cosmetic surgery" to have it removed and there is no way I'm going to pay for cosmetic surgery for something so small and stupid. Now a tummy tuck or lipo on my thighs. . . that's different. But not this. So year after year I've dealt with the humiliation of having such an ugly "birthmark" stuck to my face. My boys call it a "nipple" and I can only imagine what other people have called it behind my back. I hate it! Absolutely.

So, a few weeks ago I decided to take matters into my own hands and rid myself of the unsightly mole once and for all--who cares how risky. So I disinfected my sharpest scissors and the skin around my mole and SNIP! All gone. It bled for almost the entire day and I was a little worried it would never stop and then it scabbed over and now all I have left is this:

Of course, you can still see where it was and my skin is a little raised where it used to be but for the most part it's gone and I feel much better about my face in general. Maybe now I'll get to work on some other moles doctors have refused to remove for me. They claim they aren't cancerous and health insurance won't cover the removal of them. But if I do it myself and anything goes wrong, the doctors will fix it and then the insurance will cover it. Don't you think that sounds a little mixed up?

P.S. Don't worry--I'm not about to start snipping off random moles. Just the ones I really hate.

Um... ew. You're a much braver (and more insane) person than me. I read a book not long ago--A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon (also wrote The Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime)--in which the main character decides to cut a patch of "cancerous" skin off of his hip. Reading your post made me flash back to the trauma of reading that lovely passage. You look lovely, but of course, you were lovely before with your little eye nipple in tact. It was nothing I ever even noticed. You're so pretty, you know.

Wow, you're a regular sergion! I have a nice mole on my neck you could operate on next! Really, you look great! Plus, you are very brave!

You are seriously brave! but I never noticed the mole in the first place.

Did you have any type of anesthesia? Bactine? Lidocaine? Anything? I just don't think I could stand the pain. Congratulations! You are one brave woman!

When I was pregnant with #1 I grew a lovely little skin tag on my panty line. It was incredibly annoying, so I asked my doc about removing it at one of my prenatal appointments. He said no problem. I was expecting a little shot to dull the pain, followed by some sort of minor surgical moment. He came back with a pair of sterile scissors, and much to my horror, just cut it off! I had to pay sterilization and instrument fees for what you just did for yourself.

Wow! That was very brave of you. I would be worried about infection thugh. I know a couple of people who have done that and then got a staf infection. Be very careful.

Yeah, when I asked my doc about getting some skin tags removed he said that either he could do and I'd pay, or I could do what you did, sterilize some scissors and remove the offenders myself (for free). I chose the free method. Way to go Shana! I know how liberating that feels!

i was surfing the net, searching on gigantic babies and i just got your site, and i read about your mole. hey, i gat your back, i once had one of that growin outta the edge of my nose and i use to be soo embarrase about it and use to envision it as geeting so big that i might suffocate or disfifure me, one day i got so annoy, to a finger nail clipper and cut the damn thing off, i did not sterilise anything, i bled for some time than it stopped. now my nose is back to number. that was eight or so years ago n since than no mole. hey, u n i are one brave people. n best of all, we did it without spending a dime. by the way, am Claudius, a Liberian presently living in ghana
